What this site records
Three things: that a page was loaded, that somebody rather than a crawler was reading it, and that an outbound link was clicked. Nothing on this site asks for a name, an email address or a payment detail, and there is nothing here to log into.
Page views
When a page loads, this site sends its own server the address of that page, the referring address if the browser supplied one, the language the browser is set to and the width of the window. That is used to work out which pages are read and whether they render sensibly on the handsets this market actually uses.
The visit identifier
Each page view is given a random identifier that exists for the length of that view and is discarded when the tab closes. It is not stored on the device, it is not a cookie, and it cannot be connected to another visit or to a person. Its only job is to pair the second signal below with the page view it belongs to.
Whether a reader is a person
The first time a visit scrolls, taps, moves a pointer or presses a key, this site sends one more request carrying that identifier and nothing else. Automated traffic passes every server-side test there is and does not scroll, so this is the only way to separate readers from crawlers. It fires once per visit, carries no content, and if it never fires the visit is simply counted as unproven.
Outbound clicks
Following a link to a bookmaker passes through an interstitial on this site, which records which operator was chosen and which page the click came from. That page is excluded from search indexes and carries no personal data. It exists because the commission that funds this publication is paid against those clicks, and because a click count is how this desk knows which pages are useful.
The third-party counter
This site has an optional analytics tag that loads from an external host. It is switched off on this domain and renders nothing at all. If it is ever switched on, it will be named here before it is, and the same-origin measurement above will remain the number this desk actually reads.
What does not happen
- No accounts, so nothing to be breached.
- No advertising network, no retargeting and no profile built across sites.
- No data sold, rented or shared with an operator.
- No cookie set by this site for measurement.
Bookmakers set their own rules
Once an outbound link is followed, the operator's own privacy policy applies and this one does not. What a bookmaker records, how long it keeps it and what identification it will ask for are its decisions, and its policy is the document that governs them.
